The Barbarian Clans of Sescheron

Tribal warrior clans of the northern highlands, bound by a sacred and secret duty.

The Barbarian clans inhabit the northern highlands around Mount Arreat, in the region of Sescheron. They trace their founding to Bul-Kathos, one of the first-generation nephalem, who bound the clans to a guardianship most of Sanctuary knows nothing about. Outsiders see only fierce isolationists who defend the mountain with disproportionate ferocity, and the clans do not explain themselves.

They are organized as independent clans rather than a single kingdom, led by chieftains and held together by shared descent and shared duty. Their culture is oral, preserved through spoken tradition rather than written record.

Barbarian practice centers on the veneration of ancestral spirits and the honoring of Bul-Kathos as the founding ancestor. Strength is treated as a form of reverence and obligation rather than a means of conquest. Academic and arcane magic are foreign to the clans; their power is physical, drawn from ancestral connection and personal will rather than study.

The clans keep outsiders at a distance, particularly near Arreat, and are widely regarded as hostile isolationists. Not every Barbarian remained in the north: Rakkis, a Barbarian warlord, left the highlands generations ago, converted to the Zakarum faith, and conquered the western lands that became the kingdom of Westmarch.

For a Barbarian to travel south is a significant thing within their culture, and the reason must be serious. They carry their duty with them even far from the mountain, and something has drawn one of them into the events unfolding around Tristram.

Example motivations:

  • Ancestral obligation placed above personal desire.
  • Strength understood as reverence rather than conquest.
  • Guardianship of something the wider world does not understand.

Suggested classes: Barbarian, Fighter, Ranger.
