Origins and society

The Umbaru live in the Torajan jungles of the deep south, in the region known as the Teganze, which outsiders rarely enter. Their society is tribal and hierarchical: high priests hold authority, and witch doctors serve as its spiritual practitioners. Umbaru culture places the tribe above the individual, treating the self as secondary to the community of the living and the dead alike.

Beliefs and outlook

The Umbaru regard the visible world as a surface over a truer one, the Mbwiru Eikura, or Unformed Land, from which a single life force flows into every living thing. Through fasting, sacred roots, and ceremonial drumming, witch doctors enter a trance state, the Ghost Trance, and commune with the Unformed Land, where the spirits of the ancestors remain. They do not raise or command the dead; they petition the ancestors and are answered. Power is understood as something lent by those who came before and repaid through sacrifice. Outsiders, seeing only masks, venom, and summoned swarms of insects, dismiss them as savages or meddlers with death.

Ties to Tristram

A witch doctor abroad travels as an agent of the tribe, at times pursuing a threat too large for the jungle to contain. Leaving is treated not as abandonment but as being sent, and something has carried one of them north toward the events around Tristram.
