The Vizjerei Clan

The oldest and most powerful of the eastern mage clans, and the most infamous.

The Vizjerei were the oldest and most powerful of the eastern mage clans, based for centuries in Kehjistan around their capital at Viz-jun. Where other clans specialized quietly, the Vizjerei devoted themselves to the summoning and binding of demons, believing they could command the beings they called into the world. They were wrong, and the cost of that error shaped the east for generations.

The clan’s ambition outpaced its rivals and drew the mage clans into open war. The Mage Clan Wars devastated Kehjistan, destroyed Viz-jun, and brought the Age of Magic to an end. In the aftermath the Vizjerei renounced demonic summoning and founded the Viz-Jaq’taar, an order charged with hunting corruption among all the clans, their own included.

The wars also produced the clan’s most enduring legends: Horazon, who built the dimensional refuge known as the Arcane Sanctuary, and his brother Bartuc the Bloody, who mingled his own blood with demons and turned on his kin. Their ruinous feud is remembered as the defining tragedy of the Vizjerei.

The Vizjerei prize arcane mastery and the pursuit of knowledge without flinching from what it reveals. That same appetite is what undid them, and the modern clan lives in the tension between pride in its tradition and responsibility for what that tradition unleashed. Renouncing summoning is official doctrine; rumor holds that not every Vizjerei honors it, and that some have returned to the ruins of Viz-jun to resume the old practices.

As the dominant clan whose war scattered the rest, the Vizjerei carry a lasting resentment among the surviving mage traditions. When the Horadrim were assembled from those survivors, Vizjerei mages were counted among them. In the long persecution of magusers that followed the wars, the Vizjerei, like all the clans, became a target of the Zakarum Church and the kingdoms that outlawed sorcery, which is much of why the clan grew so secretive.

The forbidden lore rumored to lie beneath Tristram’s Cathedral is exactly the kind of knowledge that draws a Vizjerei. A member might travel west to recover the arcane tomes said to be buried there, whether to master what they contain or to keep it out of the wrong hands.

Example motivations:

  • Mastery of the arcane, and a refusal to look away from its cost.
  • The weight of the clan’s history, carried as pride, guilt, or denial.
  • Knowledge pursued for its own sake, wherever it leads.

Suggested classes: Wizard, Sorcerer, Warlock.
