The Demon Hunters

An order of survivors who lost everything to demonkind and turned their grief into a lifelong hunt.

The Demon Hunters are an order made up entirely of survivors. Each member once had a home and lost it to demonic slaughter, and each chose to take up the weapons of the fallen rather than die with them. The order sustains itself by seeking out others marked the same way: elder hunters find the scarred and the willing, train them, and send them out.

There is no single fortress and no banner. The order operates as scattered cells linked by shared purpose and method, and marks those who master their discipline with an earned sigil. Hunters favor the crossbow and the trap over a direct charge, striking from range and withdrawing before the enemy can answer.

The order’s central discipline is a balance of what it calls Light and Shadow: hatred harnessed as a weapon, and discipline kept as the check that keeps it from consuming the hunter. A Demon Hunter is expected to carry rage without being ruled by it, turning the demons’ own corruption back on them. Members hold that a hunter who lets hatred overwhelm discipline is in danger of becoming the thing they set out to destroy, and this is treated as the order’s gravest failure.

Kings do not command the Demon Hunters and priests do not sanction them, and the wider world tends to regard them with unease. They keep to themselves, appearing where demonic activity has been reported and moving on afterward. Their methods and their comfort with the dark powers they wield leave many communities grateful for their work but glad to see them go.

A Demon Hunter goes where the demons are, and the darkness rising beneath Tristram is precisely the kind of threat the order exists to answer. A hunter sent, or drawn, to the town works largely alone, accountable to the order’s purpose rather than any local authority, and asks only for a chance to face the evil at its source.

Example motivations:

  • Grief and loss transformed into a lifelong purpose.
  • Hatred deliberately tempered with discipline.
  • A vow never to become the thing being hunted.

Suggested classes: Ranger (Hunter or Gloom Stalker), Rogue (Assassin), Fighter (Arcane Archer), Paladin (Oath of Vengeance).
