The Horadrim

A coalition of mages formed to hunt and imprison the three Prime Evils.
Origins and mission
Section titled “Origins and mission”The Horadrim were founded in the aftermath of the Mage Clan Wars, when the archangel Tyrael gathered mages from the shattered eastern clans into a single order with one purpose: to hunt the three Prime Evils loose in Sanctuary and imprison them. Its members were drawn from rival traditions, the Vizjerei, Ammuit, Taan, Ennead, and others, who set aside old divisions for the work. Tal Rasha led them, and among the founders were Zoltun Kulle, who crafted the order’s arcane tools, and Jered Cain, whose line endures to this day.
They were armed with soulstones, shards able to bind demonic essence, and over decades they ran the Three to ground one by one and sealed each in a hidden prison. The cost was severe. Tal Rasha himself gave his life to become the living vessel for one of the captured Evils when no ordinary prison would hold it.
Beliefs and outlook
Section titled “Beliefs and outlook”The Horadrim held that mortal mages could accomplish what Heaven and Hell would not: the containment of the Prime Evils. Discipline, secrecy, and sacrifice in service of that mission defined them. They treated arcane power as a tool for a single overriding duty rather than a pursuit in its own right, and they expected to spend themselves for it, and did. They succeeded at great cost, and the order did not survive the peace that followed; within a few generations the Horadrim had faded from a living institution into a memory.
Ties to Tristram
Section titled “Ties to Tristram”Tristram grew up over Horadric ground. Beneath its Cathedral lies one of the vaults the order left behind, and in the town itself lives Deckard Cain, last of the founding bloodline and keeper of what Horadric knowledge survives. Anyone drawn into events at Tristram will sooner or later reckon with the order’s buried legacy, and Cain is the surest door to understanding it. A character in the Horadric tradition would most likely be a student of that legacy, an heir to the bloodline or a scholar of the artifacts, rather than a member of an order that no longer exists.

- Sacrifice in service of a mission larger than any one person.
